Titles

The head of International Student Services holds the title of responsible officer (RO) and principal designated school official (PDSO). Our advisors hold the title of designated school official (DSO) and alternate responsible officer (ARO). Although our student team do not hold these titles, they are still prepared to assist you in general advising questions and requests.

Meaning

An RO or ARO is a school employee nominated by the school and authorized by the Department of State to advise and assist J-1 exchange visitors (EVs) regarding federal law and regulation, throughout the duration of their program.

A PDSO or DSO is a school employee nominated by the school and authorized by the Department of State to assist and oversee all enrolled F and M students within their university.

Responsibilities

The officers' and officials' responsibilities include administration of the F-1 Student Program and J-1 Exchange Visitor Program at BYUH; maintaining accurate student records in SEVIS; advising F-1 and J-1 students; advising students on their legal status; managing key processes in the international student life cycle from onboarding to program completion; issuing certificates of eligibility; redesignation and recertification of BYUH as an SEVP sponsor; and more! Our ISS advisors are here to provide you with informed advisement congruent with the local, state, and federal laws and regulations.

Qualifications

All officers and officials are required to be either U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. They must also be approved and authorized by the U.S. agencies governing the Student Program (F-1) and Exchange Visitor Program (J-1), respectively. These individuals need to be aware of and up to date with all university, local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
