Our Role
The head of International Student Services holds the title of responsible officer (RO) and principal designated school official (PDSO). Our advisors hold the title of designated school official (DSO) and alternate responsible officer (ARO). Although our student team does not hold these titles, they are still prepared to assist you in general advising questions and requests.
An RO or ARO is a school employee authorized by the Department of State to advise and assist J-1 exchange visitors (EVs) regarding federal law and regulation, throughout the duration of their program.
A PDSO or DSO is a school employee nominated by the school and authorized by the Department of State to assist and oversee all enrolled F and M students within their university.
The officers' and officials' responsibilities include issuing federal forms, maintaining student records in SEVIS, and conducting business with the Department of State on behalf of the school. Our ISS advisors are here to provide you with informed advisement congruent with the local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
All officers and officials are required to be either U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. They must also be approved and authorized by the Department of State. These individuals need to be aware of and up to date with all university, local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
Make sure to talk to your ISS advisor if you are planning to do any of the following:
